I’m now back home from vacation. I had gone up to Pennsylvania for nine days to visit with my parents and some other good friends and family members. It was a nice break from my normal routine. I definitely feel like I “got away” for a while, but am glad to be back home in Florida.
As you may have seen on my step Dad’s photo blog, I was able to go on a nature shoot with him, his brother, Willard, and my cousin, Amy. Amy’s boyfriend, Justin, also tagged along as well. It had probably been nine years since I last seen Amy in person and it was a very nice reunion. Justin seemed like a very cool guy as well. You’ll be seeing a few of the images I captured that afternoon, later this week.
First though, I wanted to post one of my personal favorites from my trip, this image of “Susie”, the orphan calf.
It has been a tradition of mine in recent years, that every time I visit my parents, I always try to get down to visit my step Dad’s, Dad, “Carl”. Carl is an 80 year old widower who lives a simple, retired life on his farm. He’s full of interesting stories and always lets me drive his John Deere Gator around his fields for an annual tour of his cow heard. Carl’s cows are pretty much his pets. Each year there’s usually a story within the herd that results in cows having such names as “the twins” or just regular first names, such as in “Susie’s” case.
Susie’s mother died a few days after she had given birth, leaving Susie without a Mom to feed her milk. Carl has come to the rescue though, and has the young calf on a bottle regiment each day. As Carl headed out to feed Susie the day I was visiting him, I spotted Susie sticking her head out one of the cracks in the side of the old barn. I could not get to the shot at that moment, but we were able to recreate it later when we drove the Gator over to that side of the barn.

Welcome back, so glad to hear you had such a good time visiting your family. This is a great picture as all your pictures are and what a moving story behind it.
Sweet Susie....i love this pic, Chad.....and there's nothing like a family reunion, isn't it ??? :)
Glad you had a great time.
Sweet Susie - cute (Love me)looks.
She is SOOO cute! You can just imagine what she is thinking. Glad you were able to recreate it.
I love the rustic look around the peaceful innocent looking calf. Nice shot.
Welcome home Chad. I like the photo of Suzie. What a sad thing to lose your mom at birth. I'm glad someone is taking care of her though.
Hi, Chad - glad to see you made it back safe and sound! I had a great time on Saturday. What a dear picture of Susie. I wonder sometimes how Pappy keeps coming up with new names for his cows, it seems like he would've used all the good ones already :)
Thanks for the shout out and links, too. When would you like to do the dueling leaf filters?
Susie is a cute calf down on the farm and I am glad you told her story.
Dad and I enjoyed your visit immensely!
Was fun to discover that you were back (saw a comment of yours over at written.inc.)
I absolutely LOVE this photo. Cow faces are wonderful and you have caught this one in such cute expression peeking through the barn. Awesome photo, Chad!
Susie looks so lovable. I can see why she would be a "pet". And what a sweet story! Nice shot!
How cute. The calf looks completely innocent. unaware of the world and its attrocities.
And from ur post it looks like u had a great time at the reunion.
glad your back you had a nice vacation.
Great shot of Susie. Good to see you back.
Cattle is worshipped in this country & probably u'll find more dishevelled state of theirs here . So finding a blog entry about them sums up my day
"Awwwwwwww...."
Cool how we can grab images that act in a way like that rubber mallet on our knees... you know, involuntary reaction. When the knee fails to jerk, you are approaching dead... Ditto when you look at an image like this one without muttering.... "Awwwwww..."
I love Susie...I love the shot Chad and how you framed it. I love it when the camera isnt straight! Hope that you had a good time with family! I am so glad that I am closer to my own family now!
You were missed!
Anna,
Actually, the camera was straight, it was that old barn that was leaning ;)
Glad you enjoyed the image. It's good to be back.
peep eye! Adroable shot. and welcome back
I love the pic too. She is SO cute.
I also love old things like barns with their weathered paint like you show here.
I also got a kick out of Susie's face. She looks happy and expectant of some love and feeding. I guess California isn't the only place with happy cows.
Too cute!!
such a touching image!!!
Oooohhh...this is the cutest thing ever! And I love the white against the red.
